North Region Club Championships Race Report - 2019

On the 15th September a batch of Dragons made their way to Preston BMX track to represent their club at the end of season north region club championships. 11 riders plus parents made the journey from north wales to celebrate their club.

327 riders made the trip to Preston to ride for their club. Hannah opened the racing with a 4th, 3rd and 6th place finish in her motos and a 6th in her final. Great moto and final results from Hannah who is getting faster all the time!

Thomas Roberts was up next in Male 8. Thomas is storming the track at the moment with some serious pedaling. A 4th, 3rd and 3rd easily put him into the semi final showdown. An excellent ride in the semi gave him a 4th place finish and a place in the A final. A solid ride gave Thomas a 7th place finish overall. A big improvement from Thomas this year showing hes making it into the top 8 in the region. Well done you!

Next up was Grace Proctor fighting it out in female 9. Consistency is the name of the game for Grace with 5th place finishes across the board and another 5th in her final. Good luck in female 10 next year!

Next up in Male 9 was seasoned pro Osian Parr. He must of had his weetabix again today as a storming pedal session gave him 3rd, 2nd and 5th in his motos. No semi qualification needed today so straight into the final and another 7th place finish!

For Male 10 Olly and Alex made the Dragons proud. Alex fought hard in his motos to come away with solid 7th place finishes, unfortunately not enough to make it through to the semis on this day. Olly had solid 5th, 6th and 4th places putting him firmly into a semi final. A 6th place semi and a great 5th in final B was a superb finish.

Tomos was up next in the fiercely competitive Male 11 category. Tomos had a mixed bag of motos with a 6th place, 4th and 2nd place finish chasing down the W8 of Jaime Rabbett. This was enough to take Tomos into the semis but a difficult race saw him finish in 7th place finish and and crash in the B final left him in 8th.

Next up riding for Dragons was Elin in Female 12. Elin had a batch of 6th place finishes in the motos and pulled it out of the bag in her final securing a 4th place finish just missing the podium. Good luck Elin next year who moves up to using clips in Female 13.

Finally to end the day off it was the last time out for our masters before they make the step up to the old dudes veteran category. Martyn and Andy were on fire in Preston. Martyn secured solid 3rd places finishes in each moto with a 3rd place in the final to get on the podium. Andy finished with a bunch of 6th and 5th place finishes to round out his season after an early puncture in practice. Well done lads.

To finish off the racing a parade was held by all clubs in the region. Our special guest Daisy the Dragon made an appearance with our committee, racers and volunteers to celebrate a fantastic year by Dragon Riders BMX. A big thank you to Andy and family who arranged this, and for sorting the food for all Dragons on the day. Also to Helen for agreeing to be Daisy the Dragon.

T hank you to our riders, parents, volunteers and committee who have worked hard through the 2019 regional series who have made this the most successful year for Dragon Riders BMX to date. Roll on next year where we will hope to take even more Dragons to represent the North region in national racing.

Track Update Program 2019

4th straight redesign and 1st straight resurface by JB Extreme Landscapes (funded by Sport Wales and Dragon Riders BMX)

As part of Dragon Riders BMX development plan our goal each year is to re-design and re-develop part of our BMX race track here at Marsh Tracks in Rhyl. This year it is the turn of the 4th straight. At the start of September 2019 we handed the keys over to JB Extreme Landscapes to completely re-design our last straight into a rhythm section and resurface our first straight. The transformation is fantastic and completes the next stage of our program of improvements.

That's over £10,000 invested by the club and by sport wales into the BMX facility at Marsh Tracks continuing our vision of BMX racing in North Wales.

A huge thank you to Sport Wales for funding 80% of the works this year with the remaining 20% coming from Dragon Riders BMX.

Next year we hope to redesign the 3rd straight into a technical straight. Watch this space!

Dragon Riders @ BMX British Championships 2019

British Championships Race Report - 2019

On the weekend of the 15th and 16th of August the largest batch of Dragons yet represented the North Region at the British BMX Championships 2019 hosted by Derby BMX club. 13 riders in total made the journey from North Wales to represent the North Region, a massive achievement for a small club from Wales.

Saturday 650+ riders opened the days racing with younger riders and cruisers on the track. Hannah was first up in 6 and under female. She did herself proud and pushed hard through each of her motos finishing with six place finishes.

Thomas Roberts was up next in Male 8 enjoying his first visit to the brits. In a tough group of 75 riders he had a storming day with a 4th and couple of 5th place finishes in his motos qualifying for the 1/8 knockout stage. Sadly a crash while battling for a 4th place left Thomas in 8th place and was the end of his day.

Next up was Grace Proctor fighting it out with 15 other riders in female 9. A solid performance from Grace gave her a 4th, 5th and 7th place in her motos. With such a tough group this was the end of the days racing for Grace. Great effort for a first brits.

Next up in Male 9 was seasoned pro Osian Parr. The pedalling demon showed he was on top form in his motos fighting with 71 other riders managing an impressive 3rd a 1st and another 1st in his motos. He then stormed through his 1/8 qualifier with a solid 4th place finish. The racing was fast and furious with little time to rest. Up next was the quater finals. Another top 4 finish would take him through to the semis. A solid lap saw Osian in 4th place with an unfortunate fight for 3rd going against him dropping him down to 5th and out of the racing.

Next up was Male 10. Olly Webb and Alex Mackie had one of the toughest categories of the day with 91 riders in this age group alone! Both rode well against some very strong riders. Olly finished with a 7th, 7th and a 6th place but had to call it day as only the top 64 went through. Alex rode well in his first brits and came away with a respectable 8th, 7th and 6th place in his motos. Sadly this was not enough to make it through and ended his day.

After an exciting day with the youth riders it was time to take it easy for the evening and look forward to 11+ racing on the Sunday.

Sunday was another super sunny day for BMX racing. Another 632 riders geared up to push the limits of the Derby track.

First up was Tomos Doran racing Male 11. Another busy group with 78 riders in total all fighting for knockout places. Tomos had a storming first moto with a 2nd place finish followed by two solid 5th places to easily put him into the 1/8 knockout stages. A hard fought knockout race saw Tomos fighting closely with riders for 3th, 4th and 5th places. Unlucky to finish in 5th place ended his day.

Next up was another seasoned pro Elin Parr in Female 12. Elin had an extremely tough group of 15 riders all fighting for the top 8 places in the final. Some solid racing gave Elin a 7th, 6th and 6th place finish in her motos. Sadly this was not enough to make it into the top 8.

Next up was Casey Webb representing female 13 age group. A top 16 place was needed to progress to the next stage. Casey rode extremely well on a difficult track and finished with a 6th, 7th and 7th place in her motos sadly not making it through.

Finally to end the day off it was time for our masters and vets to get underway. In masters Martyn Parr and Andy Mackie rode gallantly in their final year of this category. A tough group of younger riders made it tough for the Dragons with Martyn finishing with a 7th, 6th and 7th place. Andy finished with 7th, 7th, 7th but neither were able to make it to the last 16. Good luck both in vets next year.

In vets Dragons was represented by Jon Webb. Jon chased hard through his motos but a crash ended his day early with a shoulder injury while chasing the leaders. Get well soon!

Thank you to our riders, parents, volunteers and committee who have worked hard through the 2019 regional series with long weekends and hard racing. Roll on next year where we will hope to take even more Dragons to represent the North region in national racing.

Race Report - Hartlepool - Round 4

Round 4 of the North Region BMX series was hosted by North East BMX club. After an extremely windy practice session on Saturday, it was almost perfect conditions for racing on Sunday.

Stepping up for Dragon Riders in the Novice 6 and under, Hannah Mackie put in some impressive laps to finish a solid 6th overall.

With all remaining Dragons competing in the Expert categories, there were a number of stand out performances, with Osian Parr, Alex Mackie, Olly Webb and Tomos Doran all qualifying for spots in a semi final.

Tomos Doran was unlucky not to qualify for the A final after a strong effort, but went on to win the B final. Osian Parr qualified for the A final in 9 boys and showed serious determination not to give up after ending up at the back of the pack after the first straight, eventually having to settle for the 8th place finish.

Race Report - Mid Lancs - Round 3

Mid Lancs BMX club hosted the 3rd round of the North Region BMX series, and it was a hot one. A number of Dragons made a weekend of it and rode Saturday practice then camped at the venue to make the most of the weather.

Racing got under way on Sunday. Future BMX super stars cut their teeth in the novice categories.

#710 Hannah Mackie (novice 6) won her final in style.
#572 Thomas Roberts (novice 8) had to battle hard all the way in each race to take the win.
#16 Harri Owen (novice 9) crashed twice but picked himself up and pushed on to get a pair of solid 4th places.

Four riders from the Dragons contested the expert girl categories.

#861 Elin Parr, # 736 Grace Proctor, #735 Paige Proctor and #659 Casey Webb all made the A final in their respective categories and came away with some solid finishes.

Eight riders competed in the expert male categories.

Super tough racing all day and 3 Dragons made it out of the motos and into the semi finals. Semi finals time and even with a max charge effort it was a close one, and good experience, but we didn’t get anyone progressing to an A final. A stand out performance came from #175 Alex Mackie (Expert Male 10) making, and challenging for a qualification spot in his first Semi final.

Race Report - Knowsley - Round 1

Bus loads of Dragons made the trip making the most of warm and sunny Spring conditions ideal for some bar to bar BMX race action at Knowsley on the Sunday 24th of March. One notable absence was the Ward family after an injury to Mr Ward racing on Saturday put him out of action and facing 6 months of the bike.

In the novice categories it was almost total Dragon domination with Hari Owen, Thomas Roberts and Hannah Mackie all at the top of their game and taking Moto wins and podium places.

Expert male categories are hard as nails with 28 riders contesting 9 year old boys and a similar number facing Dragons racing 10 boys and 11 boys. Tomos Doran (Expert Male 11), Olly Webb (Expert Male 10), Alex Mackie (Expert Male 10), Martyn Parr (Masters), Andrew Mackie (Masters) and Osian Owen (Masters) are stars of the future and gained valuable experience battling riders with World ranking plates and racing some of the fastest boys in the Country.

Osian Parr progressed from the motos in 9 boys with two wins and a second place. A Second place in the semi saw him with a good lane pick in the A final and he ripped it up one last time to come away with the 7th place.

Expert Female categories are equally tough with Elin Parr (Expert Female 12), and Paige Proctor (Expert Female 11) both making the A final in Female 11-12. Casey Webb (Expert Female 13) and Grace Proctor (Expert Female 9) both came away with 6th place finishes.

It's AGM time again for Dragon Riders BMX. The short meeting will be held after coaching on Saturday 6th April from 12 to 1pm. The current club committee will stand down and re-elections will take place during the meeting.

Rhyl Town Council and Rhyl Fire Service - Grant Update

A big thank you to Rhyl town council and Rhyl Fire Service for awarding Dragon Riders BMX a grant of £300 towards replacement of hire equipment.

The grant allowed us to replace our aged helmet stock allowing us to offer more opportunities to beginners and riders without equipment to try out the sport.

Congratulations to Alex for winning Rider of the Month for January!

Dragon Riders BMX are continuing the Rider of the Month program for 2019. Each month a rider or riders in our coaching program will be presented with the Rider of the Month shield to display proudly at home for their winning month. The award is given to recognise and reward the rider(s) that go above and beyond to develop their riding skills.

A huge congratulations to our March winner Alex. Alex a dedicated rider who always puts in 110% effort into the coaching sessions. He has recently moved to expert class racing and is progressing well. Well done!

We run coaching sessions on Saturday mornings for beginners and intermediate riders and club sessions on Monday and Wednesday night. We have helmets and bikes and can offer taster sessions. Dragon Riders BMX bags £1000 from Tesco's community grant scheme

Dragon Riders BMX is delighted to announce it has bagged £1000 from Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme.

Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, and sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, it’s provided more than £63million to over 20,000 local community projects.

Millions of shoppers have voted in Tesco stores up and down the country and it can now be revealed Dragon Riders BMX has been awarded £1000.

Work will now begin on bringing the project to life.

Our project will allow us to retire some of our old hire equipment including bikes and helmets allowing us to deliver more sessions to community groups and schools who do not have their own equipment.

Alec Brown, Tesco’s Head of Community, said:

“Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers. It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. We can’t wait to see the projects come to life.”

Voting ran in stores throughout September and October with customers choosing which local project they would like to get the top award using a token given to them at the checkout.

Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups each time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions are awarded funding.

Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, said:

“Bags of Help continues to enable local communities up and down Britain to improve the local spaces and places that matter to them. The diversity of projects that are being funded shows that local communities have a passion to create something great in their area. We are pleased to be able to be a part of the journey and provide support and encouragement to help local communities thrive.”

Race Plate stickers now available!

Race plate stickers are laser printed on special waterproof paper with a matt finish. The riders name, number and background colour for their category can all be changed. We currently have BOX plate size large and small templates but can make plate stickers for most plates. Please just bring it in for us to measure.

Race Report - Round 2

After Storm Callum swept in a few weeks ago forcing the club cancel to the first round, Dragon Riders Rhyl got their long awaited winter series off to a flying start on Saturday 3rd November.

Practice took place allowing all visiting riders to adapt to the changes made to the track, which were made after the club invested over £4500 over the summer, before the racing got underway at a windy Marsh Tracks course.

Overall it was a brilliant day of racing at the new and improved Rhyl track that everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The club received lots of great feedback and we hope to welcome you all back to the track soon. The Dragon Riders Committee would like to thank all competitors who traveled and supported the first round of the winter series. The next round is being held on January 5th 2019.

First to the gate for the day's racing were three Under 6 Novices. Alfie Jones (Dragon Riders) put in a perfect display taking all 4 wins, leading all 4 races start to finish. The 2 youngest competitors (aged 4 and 5) ran together with Ellis Ward (Dragon Riders) taking four 2nds just in front of Hannah Mackie (Dragon Riders).

Next to the line were the Under 10 Novices. Visitor JayJay Watson (Blackpool) took the clean sweep just in front of Dragon Riders Alex Mackie. 3rd place went to Harri Owen (Dragon Riders) who showed good speed out of the gates against the older competitors. 4th and 5th was a battle between Thomas Roberts (Dragon Riders) and Zac Jones (Dragon Riders) with Thomas just edging out Zac for 4th overall.

Dragon Riders Ryan Jones dominated the Novice 14s, taking all 4 chequered flags. The battle for second was close between Seren Sumner Jones (Dragon Riders) and Heidi Norris (Blackpool) with Joshua McInerney (Dragon Riders) chasing them for fourth overall.

The first Expert race to the line was the Male 9-10s, Blackpool rider Caden Done stormed to 4 holeshots and wins. Close behind was the battle for second was 2 close rivals Osian Parr (Dragon Riders) and Albert Stewart (Preston Pirates), with Osian just taking 2nd overall. The battle for the remaining spots was between Alfie Woods (Knowsley), Olly Webb (Dragon Riders), Elyan Cox (Knowsley) and Joshua Blackman (Knowsley).

Bruntwoods Joshua Law led the way in all of the Expert Male 11-12s just in front of Blackpool’s Jayden Green who took 2nd place spot in all 4 races. Behind the front 2 saw some of the closet racing of the day, with all riders swapping places. Max Burgess (Bruntwood) took 3rd, Lennon Johnston (Knowsley) in 4th, Tomos Doran (Dragon Riders) 5th and Jayden Tudor (Crewe) 6th.

The Male 17+ was a mixed group of 15+, Masters (30-39) and Cruisers (24” Wheel) and the group produced some fantastic racing. Dragon Riders Ryan Evans took 4 wins to take 1st overall. Behind him a group of Dragon Riders swapped places with Martyn Parr taking 3 seconds to take 2nd overall, Si Ward battled to take 3rd with Osian Owen close behind in 4th. Luke Davies-Hayes (Crewe) took a well deserved 5th overall, racing against older competition with Karl Robinson (Bruntwood) and Simon Jones (Dragon Riders) sharing 6th Overall.

The last race of the day was the Female 13-14 race. Casey Webb (Dragon Riders) had great starts taking the holeshots, however Elin Parr pushed hard and found the passes to take 1st overall from Casey,. Paige Proctor (Dragon Riders) chased in all races and finished close behind with four 3rds while Grace Proctor (Dragon RIders) took 4th racing against much older competition.

Entry is by online pre-registration via Eventbrite with payment at sign on on the day.

Novice Categories:

Girls and Boys (will race together) 6 & Under - 7 & 8 - 9 & 10 - 11 & 12 - 13 & 14 - 15 & 16

Novice 17+

Expert Categories

Girls 6 & Under - 7 & 8 - 9 & 10 - 11 & 12 - 13 & 14 - 15 & 16 - 17+

Boys 6 & Under - 7 & 8 - 9 & 10 - 11 & 12 - 13 & 14 - 15 & 16 -17+

How to pick the correct category for your rider

Take the series year (2019) and subtract the riders date of birth (2008).

This will give you the category you need to enter

2019 - 2008 = 11

The format for each race day will be as follows although schedules can change.

Warm up / Practice 12 & Under 10:00 - 10:45

Warm up / Practice 13+ 10:45 - 11:30

Racing from 12:00

The fee per entry is £6 per round and is payable on the day.

Tesco Bags of Help

Dragon Riders BMX is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores awarded to local community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Dragon Riders BMX is one of the groups on the shortlist :)

This funding will allow us to replace some of our old hire bike stock and helmet and safety equipment. This equipment is used for our new riders and community groups to try out the sport without having to commit to spending money on expensive equipment. We would also like to purchase new club equipment and racing equipment to allow us to hold race events in North Wales.

British Championships Race Report

On the weekend of the 15th and 16th of September four Dragons were representing the North at the British BMX Champs 2018 hosted by Blackpool BMX club.

Saturdays weather was kind, and racing for the younger BMXers kicked off with the 6 and unders by noon. In 8 boys Osian Parr had his work cut out against 71 of the fastest 8 year old boys in the country. He got his head down and boomed through the motos and his 1/8 final. Onto the ¼ final and after trying his hardest, was unable to progress.

Olly Webb had a super tough group in the 9 boys with 81 riders from all over the country. After 3 motos 17 riders were eliminated, and Olly was unlucky not to progress.

On Sunday 1270 BMXers awoke to rather challenging conditions, either way racing was under way by 11AM with Elin Parr and Casey Webb representing the North in 11 girls and 12 girls respectively. After some mega efforts and close racing both girls were eliminated in the motos. Elimination didn’t seem to bother any of the Dragons as they soon got cracking playing in the mud.

Track Updates and Refurbishment

Re-design of BMX race track by Dragon Riders BMX and JB Extreme Landscapes

As part of Dragon Riders BMX development plan our goal each year is to re-design and re-develop part of our BMX race track here at Marsh Tracks in Rhyl. At the end of August 2018 we handed the keys over to JB Extreme Landscapes to completely re-design of our first straight and to re-develop our third straight. The transformation is fantastic and is the starting point of our long term plan to re-develop the facility and build the sport of BMX racing in North Wales.

Thanks to JB Extreme Landscapes for their hard work and to our members and riders for supporting us over the last year which has funded this refurbishment. We look forward to hosting a winter series to show off our updates and are excited to see what changes we can look forward to in the years to come.

Bruntwood Park and Roch Valley Raiders - Summer Series results

A fantastic end to another great summer series at Bruntwood!

Last round of the Bruntwood /RVR summer series was just a tad wet! Again, we had 15 Dragon Riders racing today, an amazing turnout and proves that the club is growing stronger all the time.

Alfie, Thomas & Johnny all had their first race today and they rode brilliantly, hopefully they'll want to give it another go. Grace, Zac & Harri all battled it out in the Novice 7-8, and Tomos, Alex & Paige raced each other in the Novice 9-10. Ryan racing in Novice 11-12 was mixed with 13-14 held his own and showed he was made of strong stuff. The last of the novice group was Johnny, Osian & Andrew with Osian & Andrew showing us some really great battles.

And then the experts with Osian taking a clean sweep of wins in the male 7-8 category. Elin in the female 11-12 was mixed with female 13-14 meaning a super tough race again but came away with 3rd. Finally, Martyn in the expert 17+ category as usual loving his racing and mixing it up with a whole host of ages!

North Region Club Championships Report

Mid Lancs BMX club were the hosts of the North Region Champs for 2018. Perfect weather, the steepest start hill in the North and a fast flowing newly tweaked track greeted 15 Dragons early on the Sunday morning. Of the 15, 8 were novices with many being at their first race. Racing was underway by noon, and with the motos completed all Dragons had completed 3 races unscathed.

In the Expert categories Casey Webb, Grace Proctor, Martyn Parr and Elin Parr had guaranteed a place in the A final. Osian Parr had a semi final to contend and pulled a mega performance out of the bag to qualify for the A with a 4th place finish. A finalists had a chance to contend for a North Champion title, Dragons rode well in all finals and came close to a tiltle with 2 second place finishes. Grace Proctor in her first race in the expert age group category rode a solid lap to bag her a well deserved second place and onto the podium.

Novice racing is where it all starts for budding BMX racers, after practicing for a number of months and attending Dragon Riders Saturday coaching sessions we had a number of riders representing the Dragons, aged from 4 upwards. Novice racing was stacked at Mid Lancs with many riders from all North Region Clubs making the most of the last race of the season. Stand out results came from Harri Owen with a solid performance in 7 year old boys and Hannah Mackie ripping it up for the first time in 6 and under girls. All riders demonstrated awesome skills, determination and rode a solid race to bag commendable results, and a good time was had by all.

Thanks to the North Region volunteers, BC and Mid Lancs BMX club for an awesome day out.

A huge congratulations to our March winner Tomos. Tomos s a dedicated rider who always puts in 110% effort into the coaching sessions. He finished in 2nd place in the Mid Lancs winter series in novice 10 but had a difficult day in north region round 1 at Crewe with a crash in one of the motos. He's picked himself up and is back in training. Well done!

Dragon Riders/Marsh Tracks appear in North East Wales tourism film for 2018

Dragon Riders are proud to be part of the North East Wales tourism film for 2018 showing what a fantastic area we live in. The film "Llwybrau I'r Môr" (Routes to the Sea) celebrates our routes to the sea and all associated activities on that journey. North East Wales boasts a stunning coastline, rivers, world heritage site aqueduct and best of all a national standard BMX race track :).

Beginner and Intermediate coaching programs now available

Our coaching program for Saturday is now in place and will be starting for Intermediate riders on the 14th October 2017. Each week we will focus on a different area to build their confidence and skill level. This is a pay as you go session but sign up is required.

Beginner coaching program will start on 4th November 2017.

Well done Dragon Riders volunteers!

Well done to all the Dragon Riders volunteers that helped with the biggest project of refurbishment to the Marsh Tracks BMX track in its history.

A full resurface of the track.
Widen the straights to their original width.
Re-design of the first straight.

We used 50 tonnes of new material, closed for 36 days and used 135 man hours of work. Thanks to our committee, parents and riders for the dedication they put in to bring our track back to its original standard.
